Autopilot
Have you ever gotten to the end of the day and wondered where the time had gone and if you had accomplished anything? Have you ever found yourself in a car wondering where you had been the last ten miles? Have you ever looked back over the last season of your life and wished you could have it back, b/c you failed to make the most of it? Have you ever stopped to consider how you could get to the end of the day without getting much done? Have you wondered how you could have missed the last ten miles of your journey or the last season of your life? The answer is simple, routine. We develop routines to help us become better and get more accomplished, but many times we end up getting stuck in a rut that keeps us from being our best.
When I think of a rut, I think about a season in life where we just go through the motions. Ruts are so dangerous, b/c they kind of lull us to sleep. When you’re in a rut, you find yourself doing what you’ve always done b/c you’ve always done it. In the midst of fading out, we end up missing out on the exciting things God is trying to accomplish in and through our lives. Ruts are so dangerous b/c they can keep you from growing as a follower and as a person. Instead of challenging ourselves to move ahead, we live like we’ve always lived destining us to get what we’ve always gotten.
We named this series “Autopilot”, b/c this is an accurate description of how many of us are living our lives. We have so established our careers, our families, our recreation, and our Christianity that we’ve ended up missing the mystery and the miracle of each moment that God gives us. In this series, we’re going to look at what must happen if we’re going to get out of the rut and into the zone. It’s only when we get out of the rut that we’ll find the life that God has had for us all along.
This is the last message of a three-part series given on Sunday, August 15, 2010.
